What to Wear in Dubai Desert Safari?

Pack Smartly for Your Desert Safari Adventure

Beat the Heat

A Dubai desert safari is undoubtedly one of the top experiences you must have when visiting Dubai. Riding over rolling dunes in a 4×4 vehicle, watching a beautiful desert sunset, enjoying a barbecue dinner under the stars, and participating in traditional Emirati entertainment – it’s an adventure not to be missed. However, while visualizing a glamorous Dubai trip, you may struggle with the question: what exactly does one wear to a desert safari?

Bulky luggage and valuables should be locked up safely at your Dubai hotel. Carry only essentials in a small bag or backpack secured to your body. I advise leaving passports, excess money/cards, and sentimental items behind.

Beat the Heat in Light, Loose-Fitting Attire

Shield Yourself from the Sun

Temperatures routinely soar to 104°F and higher during Dubai’s hot summer months. Pack light, loose garments that provide sun protection while allowing your skin to breathe. Synthetic fabrics and tight clothing will leave you miserably hot.

Bring at least one set of clothes dedicated solely to your desert safari and another to change into afterward at your accommodation. You’ll be surprised by how much sand works its way into every crevice; best to isolate that mess before dinner.

For Women

Maxi Dress or Skirt:

Look for breathable, lightweight fabrics like cotton or linen. A maxi dress or skirt offers sun coverage while feeling airy.

Flowy Pants

  • Wide-legged pants made of light material can keep you cool while protecting your legs.
  • Light Blouse: Pair your maxi skirt or pants with a breezy blouse or shirt.
  • Scarf or Sarong: Wrap a scarf or sarong around your shoulders or head to block direct sun exposure.

For Men

  • Light Button Down: A long-sleeved cotton shirt provides sun protection and breathability. Roll up the sleeves once the sun sets.
  • Linen Pants: Opt for a loose linen or cotton pair that doesn’t cling.
  • Light Scarf: Use a head scarf or breathable face mask to protect from blowing sand.

Additional Dubai Desert Safari Attire Tips

While you’ll work on your tan, prolonged exposure to the harsh Arabian sun is risky. Use sunscreen, sunglasses, and head protection during your desert outing:

  • Sunscreen: Apply broad spectrum SPF 30 sunscreen 30 minutes before departure and reapply every 2 hours. Pay attention to oft-missed spots like your ears, scalp, lips, and tops of feet.
  • Sunglasses: Pack sporty sunglasses rather than delicate shades. Look for UVA/UVB blocking lenses suited for Glare Category 3 environments, such as amber, brown, or rose tints.
  • Hat or Scarf: Bring a wide-brim sun hat secured with a chin strap or a scarf to wrap over your hair. Baseball caps leave your neck vulnerable.

Footwear - Shoes Built For Sand

While flip-flops may seem fitting, I advise against them for safety reasons. Thick-soled sneakers or sports sandals work best for desert terrain. Pack an extra pair of socks to swap out if yours gets sandy.

For Women:

Sport Sandals: Chaco, Teva, and Keen offer secure straps around the heel and ankle.

Sneakers: Lightweight options with good traction prevent slipping on dunes.

For Men:

Hiking Shoes/Boots: Waterproof styles with high tops protect ankles and keep sand out.

Sport Sandals: Secure straps are crucial for riding over bumpy dunes.

Kid and Toddler Footwear:

Booties or closed-toe shoes with socks provide the most protection and stability.
